Child Weight, Age and Fit

How big does my child need to be to use a Clek booster seat?

Children can use the Oobr model in FULLBACK mode once they meet all of the following criteria:

  • Child’s weight is between 33-100 lbs. (15-45 kg.), AND
  • Child’s height is between 38-57 in. (96-145 cm.), AND
  • Child is at least 3 years of age, AND
  • The tops of the child’s ears are below the top of this booster seat’s Headrest, AND
  • The Shoulder Belt Guide is at or above the child’s shoulder.

Children can use the Ozzi, Olli and Oobr model in BACKLESS mode once they meet all of the following criteria:

  • Child’s weight is between 40-100 lbs. (18-45 kg.), AND
  • Child’s height is between 40-57 in. (101-145 cm.), AND
  • Child is at least 4 years of age, AND
  • The tops of the child’s ears MUST be below the top of the vehicle seat back or the vehicle seat’s headrest in the highest adjustment position.

However, Clek recommends that parents not rush their children into a booster seat and rather keep the child in a safety seat with a complete harness system as long as possible.

Check your state laws for additional guidance on booster seat use.

My child’s head is higher than the Oobr booster seat’s headrest. Is the seat still safe to use?

Oobr headrest positionNo. The tops of the child’s ears MUST be below the top of the Oobr booster seat’s headrest. If the tops of the ears are above the top of the headrest in the highest adjustment position, your child is too large for using this booster seat in full back mode.

My child’s head is higher than the vehicle headrest. Is my Clek booster seat (Olli, Ozzi or Oobr in backless mode) still safe to use?

Olli and Ozzi headrest positionNo. The tops of the child’s ears MUST be below the top of the vehicle’s seat back or headrest in the highest adjustment position. If the tops of the child’s ears are above the top of the vehicle seat back or headrest in the highest adjustment position, your child is too large for using the Olli or Ozzi booster seat or Oobr booster seat in backless mode.

How do I know when the vehicle belt fits my child properly?

  • Vehicle seat belts MUST fit snugly and lay flat against the child and MUST not be loose or twisted. A snug seat belt does not allow any slack. It lies in a relatively straight line without sagging.
  • The lap belt MUST sit low and snugly on the child’s hips. Pull on the shoulder belt to tighten.
  • The shoulder belt MUST be at or above the child’s shoulder, lie snugly across the mid point of the child’s chest and across the center of the shoulder in the GREEN zone.

Oobr seatbelt position Car seat seatbelt position

The shoulder belt crosses my child’s neck, what can I do?

If using the Oobr booster seat in fullback mode, you can adjust the booster seat’s headrest to change the shoulder belt position. If you are unable to adjust the shoulder belt so that it is above the child’s shoulder, lying snugly across the mid point of the child’s chest and across the center of the shoulder, DO NOT use this booster seat in fullback mode. We recommend that you return your booster seat and purchase a height and weight appropriate child seat with an integrated harness system.

If using the Oobr booster seat in backless mode or using the Ozzi or Olli booster seat, you may be able to adjust the shoulder belt up or down using vehicle equipped features. Some vehicles have a seat belt adjustment feature that allows the shoulder belt portion of the vehicle’s seat belt to be adjusted up and down. Refer to your owner’s manual for proper adjustment of the vehicle’s lap and shoulder belts.

If you are unable to adjust the shoulder belt so that it is above the child’s shoulder, lying snugly across the mid point of the child’s chest and across the center of the shoulder, DO NOT use this backless booster seat. We recommend that you use the Oobr booster seat in fullback mode or return your booster seat and purchase a height and weight appropriate child seat with an integrated harness system.

Booster Seat Safety

Why use a booster seat?

A booster seat lifts your child up so that the seat belt fits correctly across the bony areas of the body (hips and collarbone). Putting your child in a seat belt before he is big enough puts him at risk for serious injuries or death in a crash. “Seat belt syndrome” is how doctors describe injuries to the spine and internal organs that can happen to children who are too small for the seat belt.

When can I safely move my child out of a Clek booster seat?

Children should use a booster seat UNTIL they meet the following criteria:

  • Weigh between 80-100 lbs. (36-45 kg.); AND
  • Reach 4 ft. 9 in. (145 cm.) in height; AND
  • Can pass the Safety Belt Fit Test (see steps below)
  1. Have your child sit all the way back on the vehicle seat. Do his or her knees bend at the front edge of the seat? If they bend naturally, go to #2. If they don’t, return to the booster seat.
  2. Buckle the lap and shoulder belt. Be sure the lap belt rests on the upper legs or hips. If it does, go to #3. If it rests on the stomach, return to the booster seat.
  3. Be sure the shoulder belt rests on the shoulder or collarbone. If it does, go to #4. If it’s on the face or neck, return to the booster seat. Never put the shoulder belt under the child’s arm or behind the child’s back.
  4. Check whether your child maintains the correct seating position for as long as you are in the car. If your child slouches or shifts positions so the safety belt touches the face, neck or stomach, return your child to the booster seat.

Can I let my child buckle themselves in?

Parents must NEVER let children secure their own seat belts. A booster seat is only effective if it is installed properly and the child is sitting upright (NOT SLOUCHING) and is properly secured with the vehicle seat belt lying flat and snugly across the mid point of the child's chest and across the center of the shoulder while sitting low and snug on the child's hips.

Do Clek booster seats have side impact protection?

The Oobr model is designed with the exclusive Elemental Safety System™, which is comprised of 5 structural elements that systematically secures and protects your child in the event of a side impact collision.

Rigid LATCH System
Locks the booster seat into place using your vehicle’s LATCH anchorage system to provide additional booster seat stability in a collision.
Magnesium Back Frame
Better contains the torso during a side impact collision and protect against vehicle intrusion.
Structural Headrest with Deep Side Wings
Connects to the magnesium frame using steel rods to reduce twisting movements and improve head protection in a collision.
Energy-Absorbing Foam Layer
Absorbs energy in a side impact collision resulting in less forces transferred directly to your child.
Belt Guides
Improves belt positioning on your child’s shoulders and hips.

Learn more about Oobr's Elemental Safety System

There is no additional side impact protection specifically provided by the Olli, Ozzi or Oobr (backless mode) models. But, by raising the child up on the vehicle seat, a booster seat better positions the child for the side impact protection systems built into the vehicle.

Traveling with Your Booster

Can I use my booster seat on an airplane?

Booster seats can NOT be used on airplanes. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the AAP recommend that when flying, children should be securely fastened in certified child restraints until the child reaches 40 lbs, and then should be secured with the airplane seat belts. This will help keep them safe during takeoff and landing or in case of turbulence. You can also consider using a restraint made only for use on airplanes and approved by the FAA.

Can I use my booster seat outside of US?

All of the Ozzi, Olli and Oobr models are approved for use when traveling in Canada, USA, Mexico and any other country that accepts child restraints that conform to North American motor vehicle safety standards.

Please note that Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan have their own testing standards and DO NOT accept child restraints that conform to North American motor vehicle safety standards.

Vehicle Compatibility and LATCH

How do I know if I have LATCH in my car?

LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) refers to the pair of fixed lower anchors built into the crease between the seat back and seat cushion. If not readily visible, the LATCH lower anchors may be noted by a symbol (SHOW SYMBOL) located near the crease between the seat back and seat cushion. For specific vehicles, consult your vehicle’s owner manual or access our LATCH compatibility chart.

  • 2003 model year vehicles or newer: Yes
  • 2001 & 2002 model year vehicles: Some
  • 2000 model year vehicles and older: No

I don't have LATCH lower anchors in my car. Can I have them installed?

Retrofits for LATCH in vehicles are usually not possible.

I don't have LATCH lower anchors in my car. Can I still use this product?

This booster seat can be used without the LATCH function provided the booster seat is properly positioned on the vehicle seat and the child and the booster seat are properly secured using the vehicle’s seat belts.

What are the differences between rigid LATCH and flexible LATCH?

Rigid
Booster seat connects to the vehicle’s LATCH anchorage system via a “fixed” or “rigid” bracket designed as part of the frame
Flexible
Booster seat connects to LATCH via “flexible” tether straps.

Is a latched booster seat safer than an unlatched booster seat?

A latched booster seat must meet the same safety standards as an unlatched booster seat. Clek booster seats meet all applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards and are safe to be used both latched and unlatched, providing the booster seat is properly installed and the user instructions are properly followed.

What are the advantages of a latched booster seat?

The booster seat, when latched, does not become a dangerous projectile when not in use. The seat remains in the proper position when the child enters and exits the vehicle. Because a latched booster does not move, there is a more consistent seat belt fit through the duration of occupancy. Latching directly to the seat anchors improves positioning of the booster in most vehicles — there's less room for variance in installation.

My vehicle’ owner’s manual states that the middle of the back seat is the safest position to secure your child. The middle seat in my vehicle does not have LATCH. Which position should I use?

This booster seat can be used with or without the LATCH function. All children under 13 are always safest riding in the back seat. The best placement of a child restraint is where it fits securely whether that is in the left, right, or center position. This position MUST have a lap and shoulder belt. Positions with only a lap belt are NOT safe for use.

I have an older vehicle which is equipped only with a lap belt system. Can I still secure my booster seat?

NEVER use any Clek booster seat with only a lap belt. Children MUST be secured using a vehicles lap and shoulder belt system.

My child likes to pull the shoulder belt behind his/her back. Is this safe?

NEVER allow your child to be secured by only a lap belt. Children MUST be secured using a vehicles lap and shoulder belt system.

Installation Issues

I can’t connect my booster seat to the vehicle’s LATCH lower anchors?

Clek booster seats have been designed to fit all designated LATCH seating locations. However, some vehicles have lower LATCH anchors placed deeper in the crease of the vehicle seat than in other vehicles, which results in variation of ease on installation.

Locate the LATCH lower anchor in your vehicle and secure one LATCH connector at a time. Secure the LATCH Connectors to the vehicle LATCH lower anchors by aligning the LATCH Connector with the vehicle lower LATCH anchor and pressing the LATCH Connectors against the LATCH lower anchor until you hear a click. Repeat for the other side.

If using the Oobr model, you can extend the LATCH Connectors to facilitate installation. To extend the LATCH Connectors, pull and hold the recline handle on front of booster seat base and the pull LATCH Connectors out.

If using the Olli or Ozzi models, you can not extend the LATCH Connectors.

Olli’s quick release system is not working when I want to remove the booster seat. How do I get it out?

Ensure that you have one hand on the front of the booster seat pushing the booster seat towards the vehicle seat back and pulling the quick release strap with the other. Some vehicle seats do not allow for the seat to release without pressure being applied to the front of the booster seat. If the quick release system is still not working, locate the red buttons on the front of the LATCH connectors. Releasing one LATCH connector at a time, use your thumb to press in on one button while using the other hand to pull the booster seat forward. Repeat for the other LATCH connector.

If you are still experiencing problems, please notify us at 1-866-656-2462. Do not attempt to make repairs or to otherwise modify or tamper with your booster seat.

I noticed that the back pivots freely for recline. Is it safe to use this feature WITHOUT using the lower LATCH anchors.

NEVER use the recline feature without the booster seat's lower LATCH connectors securely attached to the vehicle's lower LATCH anchors. When using the booster seat without using the latch connectors , the back of this booster seat base MUST contact the vehicle seat back.

I noticed that the seat back pivots freely on the cushion and does not lock into an upright position or lock into a recline mode when the recline feature is activated. Is this safe?

The Oobr booster seat is designed with a free pivoting back in order that it fit different vehicle seat angles so that the back of the booster seat will always be in contact with the vehicle seat back. Oobr was designed such that this free-pivoting back can be used in conjunction with Oobr's rigid LATCH system to provide a controlled maximum recline position. The LATCH system operates like the seat track on your driver's seat (slides fore aft) locking in different positions -- this is what locks the booster seat relative to the vehicle seat while the seat belt secures the child in the booster seat relative to the vehicle seat. Providing the booster seat's lower LATCH connectors and the booster seat back or headrest is in contact with the front surface of the vehicle seat back or headrest, that recline position is safe for use.

NEVER use the recline feature without the booster seat's lower LATCH connectors securely attached to the vehicle's lower LATCH anchors. When using the booster seat without using the latch connectors, the back of this booster seat base MUST contact the vehicle seat back.

When I secure my booster seat to the vehicle’s LATCH system, there is a gap between my booster seat and the vehicle seat back. Is this safe?

Some vehicles have lower LATCH anchors placed deeper in the crease of the vehicle seat than others do, which results in variation in the size of the gap between the back of the booster seat and the back of the vehicle seat.

If using the Oobr model in the Backless mode, adjust the booster seat so that the back of the booster seat sits firmly against the vehicle seat back. DO NOT allow a gap between the booster seat and the vehicle seat back.

If using the Oobr model in the Full back mode, adjust the booster seat so that the booster seat headrest is in contact with the front surface of the vehicle seat back or headrest. DO NOT allow a gap between the booster seat headrest and the vehicle seat back or headrest. Providing that the child is properly secured in the booster seat and that the booster seat’s LATCH Connectors are connected to the vehicle’s LATCH lower anchors, a gap between the booster seat base and the vehicle seat back is acceptable.

If using the Olli or Ozzi models, providing that the child is properly secured in the booster seat and that the booster seat’s LATCH Connectors are connected to the vehicle’s LATCH lower anchors, a gap between the booster seat base and the vehicle seat back is acceptable.

When I secure my booster seat to the vehicle’s LATCH system, I have trouble buckling the seat belt. What can I do?

Do NOT secure any Clek booster seat to the vehicle’s LATCH anchorage system if the seat belt or seat belt buckle is not easily accessible with the booster seat latched in place. You can safely use your Clek booster seat without using the LATCH connectors provided the booster seat is properly positioned on the vehicle seat and the child and the booster seat are properly secured using the vehicle’s seat belts.

See instructions on how to safely use your booster seat without using LATCH Connectors.

How do I adjust the headrest on my Oobr booster seat?

Oobr seatbelt positionPress the button on the Headrest Adjuster on the right-hand side of the seat (when facing front of seat) 1 and raise or lower the Headrest into one of the 11 height positions. Then, release button on the Headrest Adjuster to lock in place.

Always check for proper shoulder belt fit after adjusting the headrest. See the proper seat belt fit.

Is it safe for my child to sit in a reclined position in their booster seat?

Always ensure that the vehicle seat is locked in the upright position. Never allow the child to sit in a booster seat with the vehicle seat back reclined.

You can safely recline the Oobr booster seat when used in fullback mode, providing it is installed using the LATCH connectors and that the child is properly positioned and securely fastened in the booster seat. Always check that the vehicle seat belt fit on the child whenever the recline position of the booster seat changes.

It is NOT safe to recline the booster seat if it is installed without using the LATCH connectors.

I'm not certain I installed by booster seat correctly?

If you are unsure about the proper installation process, please do not attempt to use this booster seat. Please contact a Clek customer service representative at 1-866-656-2462 and someone would happily walk you through the installation process.
